Meet & Greet: Case Managers and Belwood Clients Connect

On October 16th, 2024, we brought together our case managers and Belwood clients for a heartfelt introduction that went beyond just names and titles. The objective of this gathering was clear: as we strive to improve our client experience, we recognize the need for change. This initiative allows us to individualize each program with a case manager who best fits the unique needs of our clients.

For our case managers, it was a chance to listen and learn, gaining insight into the personal stories behind each client’s journey. This connection helps them craft care plans that feel more personal and compassionate. Through these small but meaningful steps, we are creating an environment where clients can feel supported, not just clinically but emotionally, on their path to recovery. It’s about helping them find hope and strength in the knowledge that they are not alone—that our team is walking this journey with them, every step of the way.

Broadstep Ladies Bowling Outing: Cancer Awareness and Self-Care

On October 15th, 2024, Quest Behavioral Healthcare hosted a bowling outing for the ladies from Broadstep to mark Cancer Awareness Month. The group dressed in pink to show their support and spent the day having fun, relaxing, and enjoying each other’s company.

Each participant received a “self-care” package that included items like lotions, face serums, a Halloween mask to decorate, and some candy. These simple gifts were meant to encourage relaxation and creativity. After bowling, they all sat down together for a meal, which helped build a stronger sense of community.

For the clients, the outing was a chance to connect, express themselves, and focus on self-care—all of which are important for mental well-being. Participating in enjoyable activities and taking time to relax helped improve their overall well-being.

For the staff, this activity served as a reminder of how beneficial recreational activities can be for mental health. Watching the ladies engage in something fun and social was a great example of how self-care and connection can make a big difference.

This activity reflects Quest Behavioral Healthcare’s mission of supporting mental health by offering activities and services that help individuals lead fulfilling and healthy lives.

A Fun-Filled Bowling Day for Residents of Keefe and Keihnau Homes

On October 7th, 2024, residents from our Keefe and Keihnau homes had a great outing to the bowling alley. These homes provide higher levels of care for individuals with developmental disabilities. Everyone enjoyed bowling, along with some pizza fries and soda. It was wonderful to see clients who usually keep to themselves expressing their excitement.

By participating in the bowling outing, they not only had a great time but also built social skills, boosted their confidence, and made connections with others. These positive experiences support their overall well-being and align with our mission to help them lead happier and more fulfilling lives. We will continue to organize similar outings throughout to encourage these benefits.

Creating Connections: A Day of Fun, Art, and Music

On September 25th, 2024, we hosted a fun and creative activity day, bringing together a colorful mix of art supplies like crayons, paints, and canvases. To make it even more special, we played classic country music from beloved artists such as Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Garth Brooks. The combination of music and art created a warm, inviting atmosphere that encouraged some of our quieter clients to step out of their shells and join in the fun.

The impact of this day went beyond just being enjoyable. It provided our residents with a chance to connect with each other, express themselves creatively, and build their confidence in a friendly environment. We witnessed firsthand how music and art can create bonds and help break down social barriers, making everyone feel more at ease. Through this experience, our residents discovered that trying new things can lead to great friendships, improve their communication skills, and serve as a healthy way to manage stress and emotions. It was heartwarming to see them enjoy the process and celebrate their creativity together.

 

Community Outing and Learning Experience: Beetlejuice 2 Screening

On September 9th, 2024, we organized a fun outing to see Beetlejuice 2 for a large group from nine of our residential homes. Each person received a large popcorn and soda to enjoy during the movie, making it a great experience for all. This outing not only provided enjoyment but also encouraged social interaction, helped reduce stress, and fostered a sense of community among the clients, contributing to their overall well-being and personal growth.

Welcoming Clients with Care

Starting in September 2024, we are excited to welcome a new client to Chambers Home. As part of our Life Enrichment program, we have introduced “Welcome Home” packages! These packages include essentials like body wash, perfume, dental hygiene products, deodorant, a notebook, and a sweet treat or two. We provide these items to help new arrivals feel at ease and make their transition to a new place more comfortable.

By offering these welcome packages, we aim to help clients feel more at home while also promoting a sense of independence.

Wisconsin State Fair 2024 Highlights

From August 1st to August 11th, the Milwaukee area celebrated its annual Wisconsin State Fair. For the second year in a row, Broadstep provided each client with the opportunity to attend the fair. Each participant received an entry ticket and $20 in cash to purchase food, including the famous cream puff. This year, we ventured to try the “bug tacos,” featuring deep-fried crickets on a tortilla with lettuce and cheese, which surprisingly tasted like peanuts. We also enjoyed a variety of other fair favorites, such as the Krispy Kreme hamburger, brats, corn dogs, deep-fried beans, sliders, and boba tea. Our day included rides on the giant Ferris wheel and giant slide, playing games, and shopping for local products at the Wisconsin Pavilion.

This experience offered residents, a chance to build independence and self-confidence. Navigating the fair allowed them to practice making decisions and managing money in a real-world environment. Trying new foods and participating in different activities encouraged them to step out of their comfort zones, boosting their adaptability and self-assurance. The social interactions during the event also helped improve communication skills, and successfully managing their day on their own contributed to their personal growth and a stronger sense of independence.

 

 

Broadstep’s 2nd Annual BBQ: A Delightful Community Celebration

On July 25, 2024, Broadstep hosted its 2nd annual BBQ, which was a delightful event for everyone involved. Rupena’s Fine Foods from West Allis, WI, catered the event, providing delicious homemade brats, sauerkraut, burgers, and pasta salad that our clients thoroughly enjoyed. Pete’s Pops from Milwaukee, WI, also provided local and organic popsicles, which were a refreshing treat for everyone.

DJ Nic Stokes, a talented local performer who recently played in New York, returned to provide music, adding to the festive atmosphere. One of the highlights was a dunk tank, where our staff member LaDaydra volunteered to be dunked, creating a fun and engaging activity for the clients.The BBQ was a huge success, and we are very grateful to everyone who helped make this day special for our clients.

The event helped residents build stronger connections with others and provided a fun way for them to engage in social activities. It was a chance for them to improve their social skills and enjoy a supportive community experience.

Colorful Creations: Art Therapy at Eickstaedt House, Watertown, WI

On July 9th, 2024, the Life Enrichment team visited Watertown, WI, for an engaging art therapy session at the Eickstaedt house. We started the day with breakfast and donuts from a local spot called “The Pine Cone.” Our activity focused on understanding why we are drawn to certain colors. We had a pile of about 500 crayons, which we enjoyed sorting through. Each person then picked 27 crayons for their project. Some chose bright rainbows, pinks, and oranges, while one person picked browns because they felt an “earthy” connection.

We glued our selected crayons in a line on a canvas and used a hair dryer to melt them, creating unique patterns as the wax dripped. This activity allowed residents to express their emotions and preferences through color and art, giving them a sense of accomplishment and enhancing their fine motor skills and creativity. The session was full of joy and creativity, and everyone left with a smile on their face.

 

Broadstep 2nd Annual BBQ event

Lisbon and Nash Bowling Outing

On June 25, 2024, Lisbon and Nash houses organized a special outing to a bowling alley. Lisbon and Nash, being neighbors, have a close-knit group of staff and clients who are all familiar with each other. One ongoing joke among them is that Brandon, who works at Nash, claims to be a “professional bowler.” To put this claim to the test, they decided to spend their outing bowling. The competition turned out to be more intense than expected, with clients showing impressive skills. Despite Brandon’s exceptional performance, dominating every game, the event was a delightful display of friendly competition among staff and clients. It provided an opportunity for everyone to bond outside of their usual routine and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere.

The outing also highlighted the importance of camaraderie and teamwork within the community. It showed how shared activities can strengthen relationships and create lasting memories. After three rounds of bowling, everyone gathered like a family to reflect on the day’s fun over pizza, wings, soda, and a special treat—donuts from Cranky Al’s in Wauwatosa!

Summer Fun at Belwood During Building Renovation

On June 24th, 2014, we began renovating Belwood, starting a complete transformation of the entire building. While this means there will be some additional noise and mess for our staff and clients. Despite the disruptions, our team decided to have some fun by bringing out water cannons, a big bucket of water, and a bubble machine. Staff eagerly joined in, ensuring everyone who wanted to participate could join while respecting those who preferred not to.
We had a fantastic time playing in the courtyard on this lovely summer day. After cleaning up, everyone expressed interest in doing it again. This spontaneous activity showed us how important it is to stay positive and enjoy ourselves, even when things are busy and challenging.

A Fantasy Breakfast Day at Kiehnau House

On June 13th, 2024, the residents of Kiehnau House enjoyed a pleasant surprise from the life enrichment team – a tasty breakfast straight from the kitchens of Mykonos. With plates full of fluffy buttermilk pancakes, savory bacon, and perfectly scrambled eggs, everyone gathered around the table for a morning of good food and friendly company. During the meal, conversation shifted to a fun activity – their own cartoon fantasy sports league. Each resident had their own team of players and stats, with a dedicated reporter giving daily updates on the league’s progress. This imaginative project, organized by the staff at Kiehnau House, took residents into a world of make-believe and friendly competition.

Apart from the enjoyment, this activity had meaningful benefits. By using their creativity and imagination, residents engaged in mental exercises that can improve overall mental acuity. Also, the group activity encouraged socializing and strengthened relationships among residents. After the sports talk, residents admired one another’s artwork as they shared drawings of “the lady.” This added element of shared creativity made the morning even more enjoyable.

In conclusion, the breakfast and activities put together by the Kiehnau House team not only gave residents a pleasant start to their day but also supported mental, social, and creative well-being. It shows the thoughtful and engaging efforts of the staff at Kiehnau House.

A Day at Discovery World with Keefe House

June 4th, 2024, was a special day for everyone at Keefe house and their OC as they enjoyed a day trip to Discovery World! Keefe is one of Broadstep’s homes for individuals with developmental disabilities, and this outing was a great chance for fun and learning.

We started the day at Discovery World’s huge aquarium, where our clients got to pet stingrays and even a 200-year-old sturgeon from Lake Michigan. This hands-on experience helped our clients learn about marine life and the ecosystems of our local lakes. We also explored how machines are made. Discovery World’s interactive exhibits made it easier for us to understand and enjoy what we saw, enhancing our knowledge of basic engineering and technology.

One of the highlights was the Les Paul exhibit, which everyone loved. Les Paul was a pioneer in creating the electric guitar, and we saw the first electric guitar ever made along with autographs from famous musicians from the 1930s. Our clients learned about the history of music technology and how sound can be manipulated. We even got to change sound waves and play a few guitars, which was a fun way to understand the principles of music and sound engineering.

After filling our minds with new information, we had lunch on the pier with a lovely view of the lake. Everyone came back home smiling and excited to share their experiences with the other staff members. Overall, the trip provided valuable educational experiences that enriched our clients’ understanding of science, technology, and music.

Mother’s Day Prep Event at Chambers and Underwood

We hosted a wonderful Mother’s Day prep event at our two all-female houses, Chambers and Underwood. Broadstep provided a full mobile nail salon, which our residents loved. They thoroughly enjoyed getting their nails done and learning some self-care tip. It was not only a fun and relaxing experience but also an educational one, as they picked up new skills and ideas for personal grooming and self-pampering. The activity brought everyone together, fostering a sense of community and making Mother’s Day even more special for all involved.

Home Run Heroes: A Grand Slam Day with the Milwaukee Brewers!

On May 16th, we took the gentlemen from Kiehnau to see an exciting game played by the Milwaukee Brewers! The Brewers triumphed over the Pirates with a score of 10-2! They managed to hit an impressive 5 home runs in one game, a rare feat that hasn’t occurred since 1988. Observing the exceptional performance of the Milwaukee Brewers was not just fun but also educational. Seeing the skill and teamwork required in professional baseball helped our residents gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for the sport. They were particularly impressed by the rarity of the Brewers hitting five home runs in a single game, something that hadn’t happened since 1988.

This unique moment got everyone talking and thinking about how important these achievements are in the history of sports. They all enjoyed classic stadium fare like hot dogs with special sauce, fries, soda, and, of course, peanuts. It was a memorable outing where they not only had a good time but also learned about sportsmanship and team spirit.

Musical Outing at Fireside Theater

Our staff took two residents from the Milford Home to the Fireside Theater in Fort Atkinson to see a musical this month. The residents had a great time enjoying the food, the musical, and each other’s company. This outing helped build strong bonds among the residents and caregivers, which made everyone feel good and connected. It shows how giving residents fun experiences can help them grow personally, make friends, and be happier.

Underwood Residents Learn and Enjoy Gardening Together

We created a garden at Underwood in the first week of May. We put the garden bed together, filled it with soil, and some of us used our feet to break up clumps of dirt. The ladies involved are excited to start growing vegetables and flowers when the weather is just right.

Through this activity, the residents learned valuable lessons about gardening. They found out how to prepare a garden bed, which is the first step in growing plants well. They also got practical experience in handling soil and learned why soil quality matters for plant growth. Moreover, they understood the process of planting and the right time of year for growing vegetables and flowers. Overall, this activity was enjoyable and educational for the residents.

Community Bowling Day: Bringing Belwood, Hampton, and Thurston Together

In April 2024, residents from Belwood, Hampton, and Thurston participated in a scheduled bowling event and enjoyed lunch. The major goal was to promote community engagement and enjoyment. This event provided an opportunity for attendees to socialize, establish connections, build community connections while enjoying the recreational activity of bowling. Sharing a lunch together created a comfortable environment in which people could bond and get to know one another better, establishing a sense of belonging as well as fellowship among community members. Engaging in bowling activities can provide numerous benefits for residents in terms of their mental, physical, and emotional well-being.

Art Therapy Day: Healing Through Creativity

On April 18th, 2024, we enjoyed Art Day by visiting Kinnickinick and Bluemound. We used canvases and carbon paper to trace outlines, then filled them with colors using our creativity. This hands-on activity not only enhanced their artistic skills but also encouraged concentration and imaginative thinking. By engaging themselves in the creative process, residents discovered the joy of self-expression and gained confidence in their abilities to create meaningful artwork. Overall, the Art Day fun served as a platform for residents to unleash their creativity and cultivate a deeper appreciation for the arts.

 

Zoo Excursion for Belwood, Nash, Lisbon, and Keefe Residents

We arranged a trip to the Milwaukee County Zoo in April 2024 for the residents of Belwood, Nash, Lisbon, and Keefe houses. Our goal was to give them a fun and educational experience outside their usual routine. On this sunny day, residents savored popcorn, big soft pretzels, and soda while exploring the zoo. The aim was to create a fun day out that brings happiness and involvement to our residents.

By watching the elephants and seeing different types of snakes, residents not only had fun but also learned about animals and where they live. Bringing along our one-on-one clients ensured that everyone, no matter their needs, could join in and enjoy the outing. This activity shows our dedication to providing complete care and always looking for ways to improve the lives of our residents through enjoyable experiences.

Harley Davidson Museum Excursion

As part of our commitment to providing comprehensive healthcare services, we organized a visit to the Harley Davidson Museum for our residents. During the visit on April 11th, 2024, residents from Thurston and Hampton had the opportunity to learn about the rich history of the iconic motorcycle company.

Moreover, residents were able to engage in hands-on experiences by sitting on the motorcycles, allowing them to feel the exhilaration and freedom associated with riding. This activity not only provided a memorable and enjoyable experience but also served as a therapeutic opportunity for residents to explore new sensations and interests.

In addition to exploring the museum, residents had the chance to bond with each other over root beer, fostering a sense of fellowship and community. This social aspect of the visit contributed to our objective of enabling residents to become productive members of society and lead happy, fulfilled lives. Through activities like the Harley Davidson Museum visit, Quest Behavioral Healthcare continues its commitment to providing holistic care and support to individuals experiencing mental illness. Tie-Dyeing Activity at Chambers Group Home

On April 9th, 2024, the women at Chambers Group Home took part in a tie-dyeing activity. The goal was to provide them with a creative outlet and strengthen their sense of community.

The women, known for their love of crafts and hands-on activities, enthusiastically participated in the tie-dyeing process. By twisting, tying, and dyeing plain shirts, they not only expressed themselves artistically but also learned new techniques in fabric dyeing.

Through collaboration and communication during the activity, the residents built stronger relationships with each other and developed important social skills. Additionally, the activity provided a therapeutic opportunity for the women to relax, unwind, and express themselves in a positive manner. Overall, the tie-dyeing activity promoted creativity, community, and personal growth among the residents of Chambers Group Home.

Wisconsin’s Remarkable Solar Eclipse Event: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience!

Let’s revisit the awesome event that happened on April 8th, 2024 – the solar eclipse! Our group home residents had a fantastic opportunity to witness 91% of the sun being covered by the moon, a rare occurrence that won’t repeat for another 300 years!

To ensure everyone’s safety, we provided special glasses so that everyone could observe the eclipse without harming their eyes. We also had some themed snacks like Moon Pies, Sun Chips, and Eclipse gum to munch on while we enjoyed the show.

The weather couldn’t have been better, with clear skies and a pleasant temperature of 70°F, creating the perfect backdrop for this extraordinary experience.

Participating in events like this isn’t just about having a good time and making memories; it’s also a chance to learn fascinating things about how the sun, moon, and Earth interact. Witnessing natural phenomena like a solar eclipse raises our curiosity and deepens our understanding of the world around us, enriching our collective knowledge and appreciation for the wonders of the universe.

Project Socialize!

For people dealing with ongoing mental health challenges, making new connections can be tough. Project Socialize encourages our clients to reach out to others and start conversations. Questions like “What’s your favorite food?” or “Do you have a favorite animal?” can help break the ice. We also encourage showing support and kindness to friends. It’s important to lift each other up by complimenting artwork, highlighting positive traits, or acknowledging acts of kindness. Stepping out of our comfort zones, like ordering food or asking for directions, is a big deal. It helps break down the stigma around mental illness.

So, we gathered as many people as we could and took some photos. While wandering the building, we convinced some of our residents to take photos of one another. We asked our peers for permission to take these photos. Once our renovation is done, we’ll frame these shots and display them around the building. Stay tuned for more updates!

“Peep War” Activity for Employee Engagement

On March 26th, 2024, we started a fun activity called “Peep War” to engage our staff. Since our employees work hard, it’s important to include them in enjoyable activities. We care about our employee’s happiness as much as we care about our residents.

Introducing these activities is a smart move to improve our employees lives and make our workplace more cheerful. We recognize the hard work our team puts in, so it’s important to provide them with enjoyable things to do together. By demonstrating that we care about their happiness, we’re building a fantastic workplace culture. These activities aren’t just about winning; they’re about bonding as a team and making work more enjoyable. We anticipate that this will boost morale, foster better teamwork, and encourage employees to stay longer, ultimately contributing to our company’s growth and success.

 

Dominos Tournament 2024

Ellen came out on top in our Dominos tournament on March 11, 2024! It was her first time playing, but she surprised us all by winning big!

Visit to Milwaukee Public Museum with Broadstep’s Support

We took all the houses to the Milwaukee Public Museum! Broadstep made sure everyone could go using our “Sustainer Membership.” We strolled through the Old Streets of Milwaukee exhibit and checked out their famous candy shop. After lunch, everyone got to pick a treat to enjoy.

Artful Wellness Activity

On February 22nd 2024, we had our residents create art portfolios! We regularly work on art projects together as a group. We used folders to store their artwork, ensuring it stays safe. The folders also look really cool because we added personalized touches. During this session, we saw drawings of a dragon, flowers, and a sports car.

Looking forward, we’re gearing up for self-portraits next week, which will also get added in these portfolios.

Beyond the fun and creativity, engaging in these artistic activities is good for our residents’ mental well-being. Numerous medical experts and studies highlight the positive impact of art on health. Creating art can reduce stress, enhance mood, and even improve cognitive functions. It’s like giving our minds a therapeutic workout, contributing to overall wellness. So, it’s not just about having fun; but it also holds potential medical advantages for our residents.

 Valentine’s Day Celebration

Fat Tuesday Celebration at Broadstep: A Cultural Experience for Residents

On February 13th 2024, Broadstep had a festive celebration for Fat Tuesday! We marked the start of Mardi Gras with music, donned traditional yellow, purple, and green attire, and enjoyed a Wisconsin tradition by indulging in pączki, which are Polish donuts filled with sweet prune filling. They were absolutely delicious, and we supported a lovely local bakery, “Grebe’s”!

Our residents not only savored the delicious treats but also gained a cultural experience by participating in the celebration. This event provided an opportunity for social interaction, cultural appreciation, and an understanding of diverse traditions.

The Be Nice Challenge: Building a Positive Community Through Kindness and Respect 

We introduced a new initiative called “The Be Nice Challenge” and our resident, Frances, eagerly volunteered to be the first participant. In our team discussion, we set clear goals for her and had some fun with a creative craft activity involving all the residents. As part of the challenge, we made a deal with Frances – if she manages to be nice without any tricky behavior for a week, she’ll be treated to a spa day and a shopping spree at Walmart using her debit card.

To keep tabs on her progress, we set up a countdown tracker, and our resident assistants are there to lend a hand, reminding Frances to mark off each day and gently guiding her if she starts showing any sass. Frances is really excited about winning this challenge and can’t wait for the rewards.

But “The Be Nice Challenge” is about more than just rewards; it’s a hands-on way for Frances to enhance her interpersonal skills. We want her to learn how being kind makes a positive community. Our goal is to make sure everyone in the community feels good and has a chance to grow personally. By offering such engaging activities, we aim to enhance the overall well-being of individuals within our community and create an environment that promotes personal development, cooperation, and mutual respect. After all, as Mahatma Gandhi expressed, “You must be the change you want to see in the world.” We firmly believe that these small acts of kindness will create a ripple effect, making a significant impact in our community.

Broadstep’s Bingo Bliss

We’ve initiated a new practice at Broadstep! Moving forward, we’re getting together for group bingo sessions, and it’s been a big hit so far!

Integrating bingo into our services is proving beneficial for our residents. It brings people together, exercises the mind, establishes routine, and boosts their confidence. This enjoyable and inclusive activity not only reduces stress but also empowers individuals, making a positive impact on their overall well-being and improving their healthcare journey.

Belwood Nature-Friendly Initiatives

On January 3rd, 2024, the residents of Belwood embraced the new year with a purposeful activity—crafting their own bird and squirrel feeders. Collecting pine cones, they skilfully coated them with peanut butter and stuck bird seeds to create these unique feeders. This hands-on activity not only strengthened community bonds but also provided a platform for imparting important values among our residents. Through these initiatives, we play an active role in cultivating virtues, nurturing compassion, and fostering a sense of connection within the Belwood community.

Broadstep’s Heartwarming Christmas Celebration of 2023

The pictures below capture the Christmas Party held on December 21, 2023, at Broadstep’s Belwood location. This year, our focus was on fostering a familial atmosphere as we celebrated Christmas together. All 130 residents were invited, and it was heartening to see over 110 residents in attendance. The event featured a delightful spread with a variety of cookies, an ice cream buffet, appetizers, and a catered meal of fried chicken and fries. The festive atmosphere was enhanced by the presence of Santa and his elf, accompanied by the cheerful tunes of Christmas music.

To ensure the comfort and well-being of our residents during the winter season, each of them received a new winter coat, hat, gloves, and a scarf. Additionally, a stocking filled with candies, chocolates, a small hand sanitizer, and a gift certificate to the Dollar Tree was provided to bring some holiday cheer. Adding a touch of humor to the occasion, the staff organized an ugly sweater contest, with our DSP Jeremy emerging as the clear winner. This event was not just about material gifts but also about creating a sense of community and shared joy. This event was not merely a gathering but a testament to the belief that “Christmas is not as much about opening our presents as opening our hearts.”

At Broadstep, our commitment to residents goes beyond the ordinary. The Christmas Party exemplifies our dedication to ensuring that every resident feels valued and included in the festivities. We take pride in fostering an environment where everyone can come together to celebrate and create lasting memories.

Festive Cookie-Making at 304 East Haven and Milford Home

Broadstep’s Festive Delight: Christmas Trees decoration by Residents

Between November 16th and November 27th, 2023, our team has been actively working to bring holiday joy to our Broadstep homes. As of today, November 27th, 2023, we are delighted that every house now features its own Christmas tree, adorned with the creative touch of both residents and staff.

In the spirit of Dr. Seuss’ timeless wisdom, “Christmas will always be as long as we stand heart to heart and hand in hand.” Today, we worked together to finish decorating the Christmas tree in our shared space. Residents and staff, using their creativity, added special ornaments with names, making the festive scene feel unique and enjoyable for everyone.

But that’s not all—every house got a Christmas tree and decorations. We collaborated to make them visually stunning, showcasing our teamwork and creative spirit. It’s not just about making things look pretty; it’s about making sure everyone in our community, especially those needing a little extra love, feels happy and at home.

Now, as we soak in the sparkle of lights and the festive feels, let’s take a minute to think about the love and care we poured into making our community a happy place. Our residents are more than just people we assist; they’re like family, and their happiness is at the very core of what we do. Here’s to a season filled with love, compassion, and togetherness for those we hold close and support every single day!

 

 

Thanksgiving Joy at Belwood

The Belwood staff worked hard to make delicious sweet potato pies for the upcoming holiday. We even made some extra pies for a fun activity. We compared the taste of a homemade sweet potato pie to a store-bought pumpkin pie, and everyone agreed that homemade is the way to go! Taking a little extra time and adding some love to the preparation makes a big difference when celebrating holidays with our loved ones. At Broadstep, all our Thanksgiving meals will be prepared by our kitchen staff, volunteers, and even some residents. We truly work as a team, especially during these special holidays.

 

Guitar Sessions at Keefe House: Resident Well-Being

At Keefe House, our residents felt uplifted during guitar sessions led by instructors Dwayne and Richard. These lessons not only brought joy but also highlighted the significance of fostering positive experiences. Such activities contribute to a sense of community, promoting overall well-being and enhancing the quality of life for our residents.

Beautiful Moments: Residents Pick, Personalize, and Pose with Teddy Bears

We ensured that every resident interested in a teddy bear could select one from the “pile o bears.” While giving out the bears, we invited residents to choose their preferred color and share the reasons behind their choice. Many recalled about having a similar bear from their childhood. We then asked them to decide on a name for their bear and explain the significance of their choice.

It was heartwarming to witness some individuals dedicating so much thought and care to name their new friend. We also captured these moments by taking pictures of residents with their beloved bears.

Last week residents from few of the houses went to the pumpkin patch. They were so excited to pick out their favorite pumpkins. As they wandered through the fields, we could hear their laughter and see their smiles. Each of them had their own idea of what a perfect pumpkin should look like.

But more than just finding pumpkins, this activity was about creating special moments together. Our goal with such activities is to ensure our residents feel a strong sense of belonging, fostering happiness and a shared connection, like one big family enjoying the beauty of each passing season together.

Visit to ‘Sip and Purr Cafe’: Cats, Coffee, and Kindness

October 26th, 2023, we had a special visit to the “Sip and Purr Cafe” in downtown Milwaukee. This place is not a regular cafe. It is a non-profit organization that helps kittens and cats from around the world find loving homes. We had some delicious coffee from their menu and spent time playing with and feeding about 20 cats. Our residents really enjoyed being with these furry friends.

We also had a meaningful discussion with our residents about how incredible it was that some of these cats had come all the way from Qatar, showing them a world beyond their own. We emphasized the importance of speaking softly and playing gently, not only to keep the cats comfortable but also to nurture a sense of care and understanding in our residents.

Our residents enjoyed their coffee and time with the cats, and they found out how being kind, empathetic, and sharing moments with animals can bring happiness.

On October 31st, 2023, we all celebrated with our own in-house trick or treat! Some of our staff dressed up as various characters—a police officer, a peacock, a dragon, a spooky clown, and a cat. We enjoyed a delightful breakfast of cinnamon French toast and sausage while listening to Halloween-themed songs. Following this, we started our holiday activities that continued throughout the day.

To begin, we rolled out the touch screen television and watched “Beetlejuice” and “Halloween” while snacking on caramel apples. We then came together for a delicious lunch of Polish sausages, chips, and grapes. After our lunch, our program manager and life enrichment manager walked around and did trick or treat. Every resident and staff member got a goodie bag with candy and chocolates. Additionally, our kitchen staff pleasantly surprised us by preparing an extra special treat, including more candies, chocolates, and two pairs of socks for each resident – a thoughtful touch, especially as it coincided with our first snowfall of the season.

A few residents told us about the costumes they loved as kids, and some explained why they didn’t join in Halloween because of their beliefs. Despite our differences, we all had a great time together, enjoying each other’s company and the sweet treats. Our biggest wish was to see our residents happy and feeling connected during our Halloween celebration, just as we always strive to make them feel on any special day.

Empowering Individuality: Celebrating Self-Expression at Broadstep

On October 19th, 2023, we began a big project allowing our residents to decorate their rooms exactly how they prefer. They had their pictures taken and got to decorate their photo frames in their own unique style. We talked to them about why we thought this was a great way for them to show who they are and why it’s important to be themselves.

Everyone had a lot of fun. In the next few weeks, all of us at Broadstep will also join in on this project. At Broadstep, we are all about encouraging our residents to stay true to themselves, no matter what. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Being yourself in a world that keeps trying to make you someone else is the greatest achievement.”

 

A Messy Pumpkin Fun and Movie Time

On October 23rd, 2023, we had a messy, fun day! We opened some pumpkins and took out the seeds to cook them for a healthy snack. We talked about what we can cook with pumpkins and our favorite pumpkin treats. Then, both the residents and the staffs put their hands in the slimy seeds to activate their sensory awareness.

For a fun treat, we all had apple cider donuts and a glass of ice cold milk. Later, a few of us got together to watch the movie “The Neverending Story” in the NuMotion Clinic.

 

A Day of Cinematic Joy and Music Therapy in Watertown

Each month, the Town Cinema in Watertown sets aside a special day just for our residents and their assistants, allowing us to have the entire theater to ourselves. We visited on October 17th, 2023, and enjoyed a Disney movie screening. Some ladies from the Milford Home joined us too.

 

Furthermore, Music Therapy is becoming very popular in our Watertown homes. In this picture, you can see Ellen having a great time during a music therapy session with Healing Harmonies, LLC. She had a lot of fun playing the drum.

 

 

Spooky Movie Outing

On October 17th, we attended the recently released “Exorcist” movie, and it was terrifying! We enjoyed pizza, popcorn, and a couple of sodas during the movie. Those of our residents who could endure the spooky few hours had a great time and enjoyed the experience.

Wednesdays Bingo Fun

On Wednesdays, we reserve our time for a game of BINGO. Each Wednesday, we gather as a large group to enjoy this activity. Our prizes usually follow a specific theme, including topics like personal hygiene, making healthy food choices, dressing appropriately for the weather, and, of course, some sweet treats!

“Tie-Dye Fun and Art Therapy Day”

On September 28th, 2023, we had so much fun making colorful tie-dye shirts! Our residents really enjoyed it, and even those who usually don’t join us had a big smile on their faces.

We used rubber bands to make cool shapes on our shirts. Everyone took their time and care to make them look awesome. It was great to see people trying something new with lots of excitement.

But this wasn’t just about tie-dyeing. We talked about how colors can show feelings, even without words. We also learned how to manage frustration and anger in a good way. Most of them liked green because it reminds them of growing, just like how they’ve grown while staying with us in our group home.

Our guys loved this art therapy and can’t wait to do more. They proudly showed their colorful tie-dye creations to their friends and the staff, showcasing their creativity and newfound skills. #TieDyeJoy #ColorfulArt #ArtTherapyFun.

 

 

 

Week 1 (September 11th – 15th, 2023): We started our fall celebration with a fun corn roast. We took a pleasant walk outdoors and enjoyed a calming morning yoga class on September 15th.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Week 2 (September 18th – 22nd, 2023): This week, we had a lot of fun making BLT sandwiches! Our own tomatoes were ripe, and we all worked together to pick, clean, and share them among our houses. We even cooked over 15-pound of bacon to make delicious sandwiches. And, on September 19th, we enjoyed a movie day.

 

 

 

 

 

Fun Times: Broadstep Residents Enjoy Wisconsin State Fair

Between August 4th, 2023, and August 11th, 2023, Broadstep organized a fun outing for the residents and staff members. They all went to the Wisconsin State Fair and had a great time doing various fair things! To make it feasible for everyone to participate, Broadstep paid for the entry ticket for each client and each client was provided $20 in cash to spend on food and drinks.

The staff expertly led small groups from different homes to see all sorts of cool things – like farm animals, incredible horse shows, cool cars, yummy treats, fun games, and thrilling rides. It was like stepping into a world of wonder and excitement!

And here’s the best part – Even if some folks couldn’t go to the fair, Broadstep brought the fair fun to them! They handed out tasty Cream Puffs and set up cool games like ring toss, disk toss, and basketball. It was like a tiny fair right at home. The resulting atmosphere was one of cheerful smiles and shared laughter.

All week long, happiness, laughter, and the enchantment of the fair– whether residents were out and about at the fair or taking it easy at home. This special time wasn’t only about having a good time; it was like a warm hug that made our days brighter.

Our fantastic residents and the caring team at Broadstep shared in this remarkable adventure, creating cherished memories and strong bonds. The pictures we captured, with big beaming smiles, perfectly capture the incredible fun and togetherness we all experienced.

“Surprise Frisbee Golf at Belwood: A Day of Unexpected Fun!”

Aug 2nd, 2023, brought us a wonderful surprise at Belwood – an impromptu Frisbee Golf Game! We all had so much fun taking turns tossing the disk into the special strainer target. The wind made it a bit tricky, but that only added to the excitement!

Seeing each resident enjoying the game with a big smile on their face warmed our hearts. It was truly heartwarming to witness the camaraderie between residents and assistants. After the game, we sat down for a rest, and we shared some water and snacks.

This unexpected activity taught us that sometimes the best moments happen when we least expect them. The happiness and fun displayed by our residents are the very reasons we do what we do. We eagerly await the next frisbee golf days, where we’ll create even more smiles and cherish delightful memories in our wonderful Belwood community.

Yet, the best part of it all is that no pictures can truly capture the sheer fun and joy we experienced during that activity; it was something that had to be experienced firsthand!

Belwood’s Garden Grows: First Cucumber Harvest, More to Come!

Happy news from Belwood! On 31st July 2023, we picked our first cucumber of the season from our community garden, and the residents are so excited!

We’ve all been working together to take care of the garden, and it’s been a lot of fun. Today’s harvest is just the start; more cucumbers are on the way! After picking the cucumber, we cut it up and everyone got to taste it. It was super tasty and made us all want more! Next, we’re excited for the tomatoes to ripen. When they do, we’re planning to make BLTs for lunch with a yummy cucumber salad.

Crafting Treasure Boxes at Belwood

July 12th, 2023 was a fun day at Belwood as we gathered to make treasure boxes together! Each of us received a small wooden box and used stickers and paint to make them beautiful and unique. We had a big bucket filled with shiny crystals, and we got to choose our favorite one to keep in our box. After finishing our boxes, we took turns showing them to everyone in the room. Through this activity, we learned how to express our creativity, decorate objects, make choices, and share our creations with others.


 

 

 

 

 

Anger Management

Anger management is like steering a ship in rough waters. When anger arises, it’s like a big wave crashing against your ship, risking its stability. But instead of letting anger take control, anger management helps you stay in charge. It’s about finding ways to calm yourself, preventing anger from overwhelming your thoughts and actions. As Les Brown wisely said, “Your emotions are your ship; you are the captain. Steer them wisely and navigate towards a brighter horizon.” Like a skilled sailor, you learn to control your emotions and navigate towards a positive direction.

Today, on July 11th, 2023, we focused on managing anger and frustration at our Nash house. The men gathered for a brief conversation about what makes us mad when we can’t control it. Each person took a turn sharing a time when they were mad. Then we moved on to the boxing part of the group, grooving to some awesome 70s soul music. We had a blast learning different boxing moves and talking about how it can help us let go of anger. Everyone had a chance to box and release their anger. Later, we sat down and did a calming meditation, like reiki, to help us focus, heal, and understand ourselves better. After our minds were relaxed, we had fun joking around. Even our program manager joined in and did a little boxing with the group.

Gathered in Joy: A Joyful July 4th Celebration of Freedom and Feasting!

July 4th, 2023, a day of freedom and fun! Our residents came together. We cooked tasty brats, burgers, and ribs on the grill and had a wonderful feast together. With a fun kickball game, we all cheered and laughed. Each resident got a goodie bag filled with candy and journaling supplies to treasure the memories

As John Adams said, ‘Independence Day is a time to celebrate with pomp and parade.’ And that’s exactly what we did!

A Reel Adventure: Movie Outing at Marcus Hillside Cinema – Delafield Hillside Theater!

On June 30th, 2023, we took 42 of our residents on a fun outing to watch the movie ‘Lyle, Lyle Crocodile’ at the Marcus Hillside Movie Theater in Delafield. (The whole theater was reserved for us.) The movie is about the Primm family – who moves to New York City with their young son Josh. Josh struggles to adapt to his new school and friends. All of that changes when he discovers Lyle, a singing crocodile who loves baths, caviar, and great music. Josh and Lyle become fast friends, but when evil neighbor Mr. Grumps threatens Lyle’s existence, the Primms must band together to show the world that family can come from the most unexpected places.

Everyone had a great time together watching the movie, munching on tasty popcorn and sipping on refreshing sodas. There was much chatter, laughter and camaraderie on the 60-mile trip in a rented school bus to Delafield and back. It was a memorable experience for all who participated, including the School Bus driver!

“Serenity in the Wild: Discovering the Healing Magic of a Wildlife Sanctuary Journey”

On June 7, 2023, our staff accompanied a group of 21 residents for an outing to Shalom Wildlife Sanctuary in West Bend.

The peaceful sanctuary offers an escape from daily stress, promoting relaxation and reducing stress levels. Being in nature and seeing wildlife improves mental health, boosting mood and decreasing anxiety and depression. It strengthens the bond with the environment and walking and hiking exercises enhance cardiovascular health and fitness. Close encounters with animals educate and uplift residents emotionally, fostering connection and empathy. The tranquil atmosphere encourages mindfulness and self-reflection, providing solace. Group trips promote social engagement, bonding, and community. The wildlife sanctuary trip contributes to residents’ holistic well-being and positive experiences.
